Goodbye Uncle Ron

My Uncle Ron passed away last night after a tough battle with cancer. His daughter, Jodi, has been one of my best friends (and cousin, obviously) for my entire life. My heart aches for her and her entire family - who I have been so close to over the years! My Aunt Linda has been an amazing support to Ron through his illness and through his whole life, really. They have always seemed like such a happy couple to me over the years. I know the journey ahead will be such a tough one for Linda without her partner by her side. So very sad. Cancer, once again, takes one of the greats.

Thanks, Ron, for all the laughs over the years! I have never been around you when there wasn't constant laughter. You could even make me laugh, right up to the end, even when you were so sick. We love you so much and will miss you terribly.

His obituary . . . so beautifully written!!

Our beloved husband, supportive father, adored grandfather, Ron W. Smith, age 63, passed away at his home in Sandy, Utah, November 3, 2009, after a valiant two year battle against Mesothelioma. He passed away with dignity, determination, and a sense of humor, the same way he lived his life.

Ron was born December 5, 1945 in Richfield, Utah, a son of Wayne Alfred and Shirley Louise Taylor Smith and spent his childhood in Bicknell, Utah. Growing up on the family farm, Ron learned the value of hard work at a young age, a value which served as a guide throughout his entire life.

Ron graduated from Wayne High School, Class of 1964. He married his high school sweetheart, Linda Gae Turner, September 9, 1966 in the Manti LDS Temple. They are the proud parents of three children.

Ron graduated from SUU in 1968 with a degree in Accounting and was then drafted into the US Army during the Vietnam conflict. He was honorably discharged after serving his country for two years. After his military service, Ron spent his life working in the accounting profession where he was a partner in his own firm, Smith Powell & Company. Ron was not only an accountant, but also an advisor and friend to his clients. He conducted his practice with integrity and has left a legacy as an example for all accountants.

Ron lived his life full of love for his family, friends, and everyone he came in contact with. He had the ability to light up a room with his quick wit and sense of humor. Ron loved traveling, reading, playing tennis, and mountain biking, but spending time with his family was his greatest joy. He especially loved time spent with his grandchildren and had the unique ability of making each grandchild believe they were his favorite.
He is survived by his sweetheart of 43 years, Linda and their children: Jodi and Matt Mills, Roger and Jennifer Smith, Kristen and Russell Vinik; six grandchildren: Raquel, Samantha, Jared, Andrew, Alayna, and Lauren. He is also survived by his mother Shirley Smith and his brother Ted and Camille Smith; and his father-in-law: Mark Turner. He was preceded in death by his father Wayne Smith, his younger brother Don Smith, and his mother-in-law, Rula Turner.

The family extends our deep appreciation to Dr. Akerley and the nurses at the Huntsman Cancer Institute for their kind and loving care during Ron's fight against cancer. We would also like to sincerely thank Jay Johnson and the staff at Rocky Mountain Hospice for their compassionate care in Ron's final days.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. in the Falcon Park LDS Ward Chapel, 9119 South 1300 East in Sandy. Friends may visit with the family at the Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 East 10600 South in Sandy, Friday evening from 6 to 8 P.M. or at the ward chapel Saturday morning from 9:00 to 10:30 prior to the services.

Burial with military honors will be in the Larkin Sunset Gardens under the care of the Springer Turner Funeral Home of Richfield and Salina, Utah.

In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations made in Ron’s name to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation, 500 Huntsman Way, Salt Lake City, UT 84108 or huntsmancancerfoundation.org.

Introducing . . . . Macks

Collin is convinced that he should change his name to Max (which he insists is should be spelled "Macks"). He did this once in preschool, and all of his papers started coming home with the name "Max" on them. I told his teacher that Collin brought someone else's work home, and she informed me that he had changed his name. Now, six years later, he wants it changed again. Interesting spelling change though. Very creative.

Macks also told me that "Macks is never going to complain when he has chores and he will get his stuff done and he will be nicer to his brothers and never treat his mom bad. But Collin might."

Also, Macks has been trying to get the family to take an oath tonight to forever stop using the name Collin, and only use Macks. What the heck?

Macks' book report this month needs to be on an animal book. I suggested Old Yeller, since it is his favorite movie (and he looks and acts a little like Arliss). Tonight he asked me if he could just "say" (picture him using finger quotes) that he read Old Yeller - and he could just do his book report from what he knows about the movie. When I told him that was cheating, and we don't cheat, he said, "don't think of it as cheating, think of it as a strategy."

Macks also wants to snuggle right now, and I insisted on blogging the whole Macks thing. I told him that I need to record it when he says cute things. To which he said, "everything that comes out of my mouth is cute!"

This one is for you, Grandma. . . it's snowing!

My sweet grandma always documented the weather (among other things) in her daily diary. Maybe it had something to do with living on a farm, but weather was very important to her. Me, not so much. I like to be surprised by it a little. I rarely watch the news, and rarely know the weather. So, this was a nice surprise to me today!

Yay! It is snowing! I would like to document this in my blog/diary. This one is for you, Grandma!

P.S. Miss you!

Another one from Tanner . . . .

I went pants shopping yesterday, because I needed a new size - a downsize. Yay, me! And Tanner asked me if I had had any luck with my shopping. When I told him I had, he said, "well, you'd better save your old pants."

Me: Why?

Tanner: For when you are on a commercial showing how much weight you've lost!

Dang, I love that kid. Although, is this a sign that he might watch a tad bit too much TV? Maybe. But it was nice anyway.

Check out this new website!

My friend Pam has a new website called LDS Place. And it is great!!! Check it out and bookmark it for when you need a good quote or if you are preparing a talk or lesson. She updates it daily, so there is always something great going on there.

Way to go, Pam! Keep up the good work!

New York City!!!

It has been a dream of mine FOREVER to go to New York City. Seriously, probably since seeing When Harry Met Sally, I knew I had to go there someday. And I am not sure why it has taken me so long, but I finally made it. When I went out for my last ever QVC trip, we decided to take a day and head to NYC! (this took place on May 5, 2009 - another catch up moment!)

The day started with a super early road trip from the condo we were staying in (thanks Ellie!) in Ocean City, New Jersey. It was like Christmas Morning for me - I was so excited! I was talking to Robb on the phone as we got there and I was freaking out, "I can see the skyline! I am in the Lincoln Tunnel! I am in Times Square!" He thought it was hilarious that I was on the phone (big surprise). I actually got emotional when I saw the skyline. Is that embarassing to admit? Well, I did. That is how much I have wanted to go to New York.

*** I should note, my photos of this whole day are pretty dang crappy. Shannon took amazing photos, of which I need to get from her (hint, hint) ***

Lori and I outside the very Ferris Bueller's Day Off style parking garage. The guys working in it were so friendly, I was just sure they were going to take the minivan for a joy ride after we left.

Me! In NYC! Do I look a little excited, or what? Big adventures await me, for sure.

Lisa was dying to go to Juniors - it is famous for being in Sex and the City. Which Lisa has never seen, of course. :) It was a great place!

Lisa recommended that we get Matzoh Ball Soup. She is in love with it. I truly thought it was disgusting (sorry, Lisa!). Not really my thing. But we also got some other potato-y thing and it was to die for! But I loved going to a very New York restaurant with my friends! Next time, minus the Matzoh Balls.

We saw The Naked Cowboy in real life. And I have to say . . . YUK! He really grossed me out. Lisa kept wanting me to have my photo taken with him, and I didn't want to touch him. He just seemed kind of dirty to me. And not hot at all!

We tried to get tickets to David Letterman, but no such luck. It would have been fun though! Maybe next time?

Shannon buying a water bottle from the famous Rupert of Hello Deli. If you ever watch David Letterman, you know what I'm talking about. We were so excited to see him in real life! And when we were outside the studio, there were producers and camera people doing something outside. We were hoping to catch a glimpse of Mr. Letterman doing some of his crazy antics, but no such luck.

The absolute craziest thing of the whole day (and trip, really) was that I ran into my BFF, Michele Gledhill!!! I literally freaked out. What a crazy place to run into someone you know, and your best friend? Craziness! I knew Michele was going to NY around the same time, and I even tried to call her when we got there (while enjoying my Matzoh Ball Soup - I needed a diversion from actually eating it). We saw her outside when we were trying to get into David Letterman - which she was too! Great minds think alike, I tell you! Anyway, I was super excited that I ran into her. And we all agreed that was the craziest event of our day in New York.

Michele and her friend Nancy Coccimiglio - they went with their husbands for a fun getaway. They got to stay for a few days, and got to see a few Broadway plays. Lucky!

I am on the Subway! Yeah, baby!

Shannon, Lori and Lisa, also on the Subway. Lisa was a pro at getting us around the big city. She has been there a million times, so she knew her way around like a pro!

Shannon at Ground Zero. It was incredibly humbling to be there.

This is as close as I got to The Statue of Liberty. Maybe next time!

Lori was dying to go to The Carnegie Deli. They have the most insane sandwiches there, which are actually just a huge pile of meat. And apparently their cheesecake is to die for as well. We didn't stay to find out though. We just ate the pickles they serve as an appetizer and left. Yikes! We had a lot to still see and do, so I don't think we had time to wait. I can't remember the whole story. . . .

Can you believe that sandwich? We were going to share one, and they actually charge a fee for sharing . . . because I am sure everyone does that. That is one crazy sandwich. But I have to say, it does look better than Matzoh Ball soup.

Lisa and Shannon in Central Park! We walked through on our way to see the temple. Absolutely gorgeous!

And here is the temple. Really unusual, and yet beautiful too! We went inside, and up to where the chapel is . . . to use the bathroom. Cleanest bathroom we used all day!

The book Lori is holding was released the day we were in New York . . . and it takes place in New York. So she got it there. Cool!

The Broadway play we saw was The Little Mermaid. It was absolutely amazing! My first real live Broadway play ever. I have to go back!!!

Saying goodbye to NYC. It was a great day, for sure! And I may just have to do another post after I get better photos from Shannon. We just expected her to take photos the whole time since she is a professional photographer . . . and has an amazing camera she has named "Stella."

Thanks, girls, for allowing me one whole day of our trip to experience The Big Apple! It was unforgettable!!

Just a few things . . . .

The shop vac is my friend. I had no idea what I was missing using that little baby. It made "sweeping" the garage so much easier!

I need to make a public apology to the moms of any and all kids I have been driving around in my Suburban. I vacuumed it out today, and I honestly had no idea how disgusting it was. Oh. My. Heck. And apparently someone shook up a can of soda and let it explode or something, because there are suspicious brown stains that are dotting the entire back side of the Suburban, ceiling and all. And now I have to figure out a way to convince Robb that steam cleaning the Suburban (including the ceiling) needs to be on our list of things to do. That's not going to be easy!

Michele, you were right! I loved The Proposal!!! Robb and I watched it last night, and he loved it as much as I did. Laugh out loud funny! And Ryan Reynolds just might be in my top three leading men after this (Michele, right, yet again). But it will be pretty hard to knock Josh Lucas from the top spot. The above scene had ben laughing my head off!

I love sushi! Angela and Terry introduced us to this great little all you can eat Sushi restaurant, and now I am craving it like crazy. I never knew I would fall in love with sushi!

If you ignore doing laundry for an entire week, it just waits for you until you can get to it.

Glee just keeps getting better and better. Bust a move! (although I was a little embarrassed when my mom said that she watched it. I am not sure I want my mom or my kids knowing I watch that show. But then, I do keep talking about it on my blog . . . . )

I told the boys today that their Saturday jobs were:
1. Clean your room. Really good.
2. Clean one bathroom. Really good.
3. Clean another room in the house that needs to be cleaned. Really good.
So, Collin starts telling me about the fabulous job he did cleaning out and vacuuming the cleaning closet. He explained how gross it was, and how badly it had needed cleaning and organizing. He just couldn't believe what the floor looked like . . . and asked has anyone even vacuumed the floor in there? I asked him why he cleaned it and he told me he noticed how badly it needed to be cleaned. I praised him for cleaning something without even being asked! Seriously! I am not used to that around my house. And then it hit me. The cleaning closet was what Collin picked for his #3 chore. The smallest "room" in the house. And I've got to hand it to him! It did look pretty darn great after he was done. Clever, clever boy.

My brother, Greg, is insane! Heather posted a video on of him on FB, and we laughed until we cried. Greg is hilarious, no doubt about it. Kade said that he thinks Greg is the funniest person he knows. :) I tried to find a way to copy it here, but no such luck. So if you are my FB friend, please check my wall and watch it - it is so worth your time if you want a good laugh! And if you are not my FB friend, why aren't you???

Do you ever get a song in your mind? Right now I have "You Needed Me" by Anne Murray playing over and over in my head. An oldie, but goodie.

We went to visit my Aunt Linda and Uncle Ron today, and we were lucky that Matt and Jodi (my cousin) were there too. So good to see all of them! My Uncle Ron can always make me laugh, and he has an incredible sense of humor - even when he isn't feeling good. He is an amazing person. And my Aunt Linda is amazing too. We showed Jodi and Linda the Greg video on FB and we laughed our heads off. Jodi also showed me this one, which I had never seen before! Hilarious! It was good to laugh with them.

We also went to visit my grandpa right before we visited Ron and Linda. We got there around 6:30pm, and my grandpa was already in bed!!! He wasn't asleep yet, but didn't get out of bed to let us in. So a girl that worked there opened the door. We only stayed for a short visit so he could go back to sleep. Who goes to bed at 6:30? But it was still good to see Grandpa.

We then went to visit my mom. It is always good to hang out with my mom. She told us that my dad is really loving living in St. George (she still comes up about as much as she is down there). I know they are going to love living there . . . but it is going to be oh so hard to see them move! Well, at least it is a great place to visit!!
